It's been here now for a while and this place is by far the BEST place in the area and in the burbs for quality Italian food. This is the PREMIERE place to get the best sandwiches in the western burbs. The pork, Beef, the Italian hoagies....the hot peppers...meatballs...I'm hungry now. Again one of the reason's I'm fat :) Amazing, do yourself a favor go here and shorten your life span its WELL worth it.

These hoagies are amazing. Their rolls (sarcone's) really make the hoagie. They pile on the meat. The staff is really nice, and they have a good selection of sodas to choose from - not just coke and pepsi but some orange cream, root beer, etc.) Also, their macaroni salad is decent - NOT made with miracle whip (yuck).

This is your neighborhood hoagie deli that specializes in hoagies and hot sandwiches; it doesn't try to make everything and focuses on its specialties - with excellent reason. The hoagies here are just as good as any that can be found in South Philly, probably because they are on Sarcone's rolls. I had the prosciutto and sharp provolone, which was $9 for a regular, and it was delicious with and ample amount of ingredients and the perfect balance of flavorful, smoky meat, cheese, and the fresh-baked roll. The cheese is very sharp, which made me happy. The regular size will easily feed 2. I also stole a bite of the antipasto, which is basically your kitchen sink hoagie with prosciutto, olives, tuna, cheese, etc. It was surprisingly good! Anyhow, it is crowded during lunch hours but the food is worth the wait. I haven't tried the roast pork yet but will very soon to see if it rivals Lenny's.

It just doesn't get better than a nice, Philly-born, Italian-raised, hoagie. I've eaten here twice in one weekend while visiting my girlfriend. She said that she grew up loving this place and I could certainly see why. It seems that the place hasn't changed one bit in terms of quality or value ($6-8 per sub). I've tried only two of their hoagies (Italian and Cut Above) but both were supreme in taste. They also had these peppers stuffed with fresh mozzarella that I didn't get to taste. But good lawd(!), they looked so yummy I gotta get them in my tummy on my next visit. However, I must forewarn Mets fans of visiting this fine establishment, as mention of the Phillies' recent World Series win is plastered all over the damn place. If it wasn't for the sandwiches, I'd probably have thrown up. But, I did take one of their hoagies and brought it across the border back into NYC so I could eat it on my lunch break during my LSAT class. I know. I'm just straight gangster like that.

Bar none the best hoagies in Philly's Western burbs! Comparing this place to Primo's is just plain lame (unless you're talking the original Primo's about 10 or more years back). Cut Above Deli is far, far, far better! This to-go-only sandwich shop makes their hoagies with premium cheeses and meats, so don't be surprised that the prices are much above what you'd pay at Wawa and Subway. But it is oh so worth it. The bread is crusty perfection. The roast pork sandwich (rabe or peppers) is just downright lip-smacking. The 'Old Italian' hoagie is truly transcendental! And the 'Tuscan' and 'Milano' hoagies are equally incredible. This place is so worth the trip.

Much, much better than a Wawa hoagie or meatball sandwich. The meats and cheeses are just taste so much better! I love the chicken parm hot sandwich. It's purely a take-out place...so I recommend packing it and head over to Rose Tree park down 252S and have a picnic.

Honestly, try one of their hoagies and you'll never turn back. The bread is ah-mazing, I get a full hoagie and I finish it every time. Delicious simplicity at its best. I wish there was something half as good in New York. Until then, I'll just savor every last bite while I'm in town.

They make the best hoagies this side of South Street. I'm a huge fan of the sopresatta hoagie. As long as you're not on a diet, you can't go wrong here.

Let's start by saying I am not a big sandwich fan or deli person. Most sandwiches I can make myself cheaper and more to my taste, and I hate having to stand in a long line, then bark out an order to some overworked guy and hope he gets it right while I wait in some other long line to pick it up and pay. It's all just too labor-intensive for the kind of end product you normally get. While my deli apathy has its good points (bread is fattening, and I get to bypass awful places like Subway), I probably have to get over it if I'm going to spend much time around the deli capitals of the USA, Philadelphia and New York. So, the other night, being hungrier than normal having missed lunch and not being in the mood for cooking, a sit-down meal, or fast food, I decided to give A Cut Above Deli a try, since I have been driving in its vicinity for a few weeks and wondered if it really was all that and a bag of kettle chips. It's in a pretty unprepossessing location in the middle of a strip mall, and if it didn't have awesome reviews and "Best Of" ratings, would look like no great shakes, just a place for office and retail workers to grab lunch. It is also tiny inside and I imagine is jam packed at lunch times, but at dinner time is quite empty and peaceful. While I was trying to collect my thoughts, one of the sandwich masters came over and in a very authentic deli-guy accent started asking what I wanted and encouraging me to try other stuff. Very polite and nice and interested in making sure I got my sandwich. This is such a change from the bored foreigners trying to avoid taking my order that I usually run into, I was momentarily floored. I recovered enough to order a hot roast beef hoagie and a corned beef special from their menu (which frankly struck me as a bit limited in choices). The corned beef was OK, as in it was all right, not bad, but not great enough to get me to eat another one soon. It was sliced very thin, cold and a bit blah. Not sure whether they would slice it thicker and/or heat it up if I'd asked, because that was just way more hassle than I wanted to deal with being all hungry and out of my element. However, and this is where the five stars come in, the hot roast beef sandwich was OMG THE BEST HOT ROAST BEEF SANDWICH I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. It was warm, just slightly spicy, and coated in gravy that was more like au jus. The gravy did NOT taste like it came out of a can! And the bread was great! The meat did not taste like cold roast beef that was reheated (you know what I mean, that Arby's steam aftertaste, GONE!) It was super fresh. Really the whole thing was just to die for! I ordered a "regular" size which turned out to be over a foot long and more or less "huge" in relation to my stomach, and ended up eating most of it, which was good because spending a night in the fridge made the leftover more like "OK" on the order of the corned beef. I do remember asking for some Swiss cheese on it and I am not sure if the guy remembered to put that and it was buried under meat, or if he forgot, but the thing was so good I didn't even stop to think about Swiss cheese till the next day. I will probably go back and try the Italian hoagie but I don't really care at this point if it's better than my trusty 7-11 Italian hoagies that I normally buy, because OMFG, the HOT ROAST BEEF will be there! Oh, and they have a good selection of potato chips (as in, kinds you can't find at the WaWa usually) and birch beer in their drink selection. Score.

I wrote a review about 2 months ago and it appears that it has been removed. I wanted to check back to see if the owners or others had comments and it is now gone. This makes me a bit suspicious of this site and reviews posted. Anyway, I think the sandwiches here are great, but the attention to detail and customer service is awful. Over the years we have ordered sandwiches specifically asking for no spices/seasonings and believe me when I say they put it on every time. I do not write reviews, but this time I had to b/c after stressing that my wife had an allergy, there were still spices on the sandwich. We wound up leaving the Eagles game (parking lot) and going to the emergency room as we did not realize it was seasoned. Upon inspection, it was buried all over the bread (not on top). So we were not only charged for an emergency room visit, but also had to eat the cost of 4 Eagles tickets. When I called to discuss it with them there was not one ounce of care or concern or customer service. I did not ask for anything, just called to voice my story and it was met without care. Again, I have never had a complaint about the quality of the sandwich, but customer service and attention to detail is as poor as I have ever seen. I have visited numerous Primo Hoagies establishments (upwards of 10) and have made the same request every time, and they have gotten it right every time. Not too difficult to see the customer service and attention to detail there. Just be aware that while you get a good sandwich, there is also a lot of negative behind the scenes (and I would not say this if it was an isolated incident). As for my previous review, I am not sure why it has been purged from this list, but it makes me not trust Yelp too much right now.

This awesome deli came highly recommended and it surpassed everthing I was expecting. From the Sarcone's bread, to the the high quality meat, to the stuffed pepper poppers, to the roast pork and beef this place is simply the best! The Sicilian hoagie is my favorite with roasted red peppers added, but absolutely everything I've had is phenomenal!

If you're in the burbs and you want a taste of South Philly - head to a Cut Above! They've got every cut of meat and cheese you'd want...and more importantly - they use Sarcone's bread!!! 'Nuff said. Enjoy.

This place answers the age old question "Can a hoagie make a grown man cry?" Why, yes. Yes it can. ...when deftly crafted by 'A Cut Above' deli in Newtown Square. Inside, you will not find any tables to sit at or chairs to sit on. There is only a Formica faux wood counter that is plopped at an angle, looking like someone ran out of either patience or time when installing it. No matter. This place is order, pick up and go. The staff is efficient and courteous with no glad-handing and absolutely no schmaltzy "ehhh, ooooh, whattayawant on your sangwich?" hokum. No cheese steaks. Just cold cut and hot roast pork and beef hoagies. My favorites are the, well, all of them. The roast pork or beef italiano sandwiches are made with roasted beef or pork (duh), roasted red peppers (marinated in olive oil and garlic) and sharp provolone cheese. And, yes, I know you've had one of those before; but, you have NOT had one of these before. Trust me. Try a Sicilian or Spicy Tuna or an antipasto (tuna, prosciutto, peppers shooters, sharp provolone, black olives and more -- that turns out, is NOT a random, tasteless mash-up of ingredients; but is awesome). All sandwiches are made on Sarcone's bread/rolls, and it gets better from there. Tuna hoagies are made with imported tuna in olive oil, no mayonnaise. Go nuts. Substitute long hot peppers or broccoli rabe for the roasted reds. Cut Above transcends the hoagie paradigm. If all restaurants understood their business and customers like 'A Cut Above' does, I believe we could achieve world peace.

Far and away the best hoagie shop in the immediate area, nothing else comes close. I only give 4 stars because they know they are the best and charge for it, and I am offended they use iceberg lettuce! A sandwich this good deserves some romaine.

  • Lou W.

This place isn't much larger than the average living room, but the hoagies are phenomenal! They use Sarcone's Bakery rolls and quality lunch meats. Cut Above brings you a taste of South Philly in Delco. THE BEST!

  • Rich N.

Quality and a good portion. I have never been disappointed in any of their sandwiches. They are so busy, I phone my orders in and they are almost always ready when I arrive. Because they are popular it can take a few minutes to get an order. Worth the wait!

When I first tried this shop I was a soft roll guy, they have totally converted me. Their roll is now almost my favorite part. I have grown up in the greater philly area and so have eaten hundreds of italian hoagies but to my mind this one is the best. The whole sandwich is always fresh. The mix of meats is perfect. Between the taste and texture this sandwich is heaven. I used to be able to stomach average hoagies like WaWa but after the comparison I cannot stand bad sandwiches anymore. Primos are ok, but they are not as good as the sandwich named after this shop. To my mind these sandwich's are better than Lee's and quite simply the freshest and tastiest. Between the chewy roll that is soft on the inside, really fresh meat and cheese, and the perfect mix of tastes I really envy you if you are trying it for the first time.

Perfect for lunch or an early afternoon bite to eat. Service is quick and quality of ingredients is top notch. You do pay for what you get but it is worth every penny. Call and order during peak hrs for best service.

I have been a customer there since they opened their doors many years ago. The people are the nicest. Very efficient, friendly. Love the people. However, their hoagies are not my favorite anymore. I usually get a small size--7 dollars--but lately there has been 1 or maybe 2 slices of VERY thin meat , very little cheese, etc. Maybe they only put meat on the 9 or 19 dollar hoagies these days. Did not use to be that way. I hate to say it, but, will probably go to Primos from now on as they make a nice full hoagie. Cut above--Where's the Meat???? Hate to leave ya but, for 7 dollars , would expect more than a roll with not much in it.

I love this place and is my #1 favorite sandwich shop. I haven't had a bad sandwich yet. If it's your first time, I recommend a hot sandwich that will soften up the dense Sarcone rolls. You cannot go wrong with ordering anything on the menu and I have ordered about 2/3 of it just to try everything. It's best to call ahead during lunch time to save yourself from bring in the tight waiting area.

this amazing little carry-out sandwich shop is every bit worth your drive from philadelphia, or wherever it is you are. i'd say it is up-to-a-50-mile-radius-good. whenever i can get away with it, and whenever i have my car at work, i will take a super-long lunch (it's a 20-min drive one-way from wayne where i currently work), wait in line, get a sub (or, hoagie, i live in philadelphia now!!!), then get back in my car and speed back to the office while chomping on my decadent lunch. i just get a simple tomato + fresh moz *hoagie* with a few drops of olive oil. so simple, and so, so so good.

This place is in a tie with Primo's for my favorite hoagies, as they are virtually identical. The meat is fresh and the sandwiches are very large and made on Sarcone's bread. One the weekends make sure to call your order in ahead of time...waits can be a little long. I recommend adding jalapeno poppers to the italian hoagie, they are excellent.

I tried this place out for the first time today and I'm glad that I did. I had the Pork Italanio, which is warm sliced pork (made in-store), sweet peppers, BelGioso Provalone, and a couple spoonfuls of the gravy from the pork on top. The sandwich comes on fresh seeded Italian bread. The sandwich was outstanding! the pork was juicy, tender, flavorful and combines beautifully with the peppers and cheese. The store is for takeout only and is pretty straightforward, they've got sandwiches, chips, and drinks (soda, iced tea, sport drinks). I also saw homemade broccoli rabe and fresh mozzarella in the deli case. Definitely worth checking if you've had enough wawa and you're looking for a real sandwich. They've got it all, mortadella, prosciutto, capicola. You need to check this place out. I'll definitely be back!

I was so psyched to try this place. So many Yelpers I hold in high regard raved about it. How could I not love a deli that puts out hoagies as good as the city without the long drive into town? It is tiny inside. Room for a meat counter where the magic happens, a wall of chips and a cooler. There was hardly room for the customers who were waiting. The people were nice. The food was close to the promised time. I got an Italian with their homemade hots. The sandwich was stuffed with meat. The hard roll was from Sarcones bakery. Unfortunately it was seeded - I prefer a choice of non seeded. The other thing is their sharp provolone was not hard. Huge deduction. Maybe I ordered the wrong Italian but from the on line menu I couldn't tell if there were options available to get hard sharp provolone cheese. I just assumed a bangin Italian would come that way. Don't get me wrong - this is a great place with a huge menu. I will try some other items again soon.

I got the Roma hot sandwich on a regular long seeded roll. It had fresh to made breaded eggplant, green olives, mozzarella and prosciutto. I usually order the Nonna from Primo's and I have to say I like Cut Above Deli's eggplant a lot better. It's not to breaded and oily. It's pricer than subway and Wawa but you are getting a premium hoogie. I would rather pay a little more for a good sandwich. Also, there's more ingredients so it's around $10 for a regular that you can split or have half now and half later. Go there and you won't be disappointed

Consistent quality above average hoagie shop... Check out older guy could be nicer but consistency of sandwiches above average make up for him.... Worth it every time!

I really enjoy the subs that this place creates. My sister and brother in law got trays for my nephews birthday here and cut them into small portions so that you were able to try different kinds. I tried both the turkey and the chicken cutlet and the nice part was that they include the toppings on the side so the subs don't get soggy and you can actually put what you would like on the sub. We also ordered these subs when we were visiting and ordered the chicken Caesar sub which was good but had a lot of dressing on it so the lettuce was quite soggy. Next time I will get a sub that doesn't have a dressing already on it since I am a very plain sandwich person as it is.

We got the Cut Above Italian hoagie. This is their version of a premium Italian Cod Cut. It was OK, but did not blow me out of the water. I was not impressed by the bread. It had a very dry and flavorless character. Imagine that standard Italian Bread sitting near the checkout at Wal Mart. I was not pleased. the meats on this sub were clearly high quality, but they lacked adequate seasoning and flavor complexity. I found myself really wishing they slathered this sandwich with mayo. The bread dominated this sandwich, bottom line. I can't get behind a sandwich when the bread is the center of mouthfeel and also lacks flavor. I truly would rather eat Subway. At $8 for an 8-inch hoagie, I expect much more.

I really don't get the hype about this place! The eggplant parm hero was terrible! The bread was soggy and the eggplant had no flavor. The employees were all very nice but I think primos is better.

Despite having Ardmore's Primo a fraction of a mile away, I'm happy to make the trip to Newtown Square because, quite frankly, A Cut Above is tops as far as best hoagie in Main Line suburbia. I've been coming here for years and I have yet to be disappointed, ever. There are a few sandwiches I keep on returning to, and they're all served on Sarcone's famous rolls. Just to be clear: if you are a fan of soft Wawa rolls or some kind of Amoroso type shit, you *may* not dig Sarcone's hard, crusty, seeded bread -- the kind that gives your jaw a workout and leaves seedy remnants stuck in your teeth. Or if you're a first timer, maybe you'll be converted. The only way to know is to try! Their Italian isn't overwhelming like most of its counterparts, because CA sticks with three meats that compliment each other, so it works out wonderfully. Theirs is the only one I feel inclined to wholeheartedly devour. Additionally, I have picked prosciutto and fresh mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, seasoning, light oil & mayo, sometimes swapping out the prosciutto for Genoa salami when I'm in the mood, or switching the mozz for sharp provolone. Their chicken salad is also very good, especially with lettuce, tomato, onion, and American cheese. As for hot sandwiches, you can't go wrong with their meatball parm or roasted pork, which I order with provo and broccoli rabe. You just can't. They must slow-roast it. That's the only explanation for all of that juiciness and flavor. The roll is half the equation. Or at least, it is to me. The meats, cheeses, and fresh veggies are the other half. CA gets everything right, and that's why they're my number one "suburboagie" joint. They could be yours, too. Check them out!

By far the Best Hoagie Shop ever! Ordered a Abruzzi, Napoli, and Roast Beef hoagies. Myself, my husband and Son loved our hoagies! Deliciouso! Highly recommended and a must try! We will be back! Outstanding Hoagie Shop! Great service too. This establishment gives Primo's a run for its money without a doubt!

If there is a such thing as craft beer, then this is a craft hoagie. An excellently-planned, made-with-love, memorable hoagie. Our favorite soft roll hoagies are LaSpada's in Parkside, PA. Our favorite hard roll hoagies are, of course, Cut Above Deli. The sandwich menu is very thorough, has a lot of gourmet-end sandwich options (gourmet for hoagies, I'm not talking watercress + endive from Fortnum and Mason or anything), with good-quality ingredients. I'm sure they'll make something custom for whatever you want, but we normally like the options on the menu and go with one of those. We've gotten hoagies, exclusively, every time we go. I hate to admit I've never tried any of the high-quality looking deli items they have in the case. I hope to remember to plan for that some time, instead of just being hoagie-crazed as usual. Everything always smells great, and looks beautiful, so I imagine it will impress as well as the sandwiches do. The guys in there are always professional. I sometimes get a cool-guy city-type vibe, but they are always polite and helpful. Food is ready when they say it will be, and is always well wrapped and presentable. Nothing has ever been leaky or fallen apart, etc. as it sometimes can with hoagies. VERY easily Cut Above's sandwiches will rival and beat even the better NYC sandwiches I've had (Katz's, etc.). I can say that about a hard roll sandwich because this is often the NY style. When it comes to soft roll sandwiches, NYC doesn't even try, and they'd lose anyway. My one complaint is that they close at 7pm, which seems unusually early compared to similar places, even if they do enough business to not need to stay open longer, it's still annoying. In case a manger is reading this, some feedback from a local resident: there have been many times we'd have gone to Cut Above if hours had been later. A lot of professionals who live locally and commute to the city (like us) have later evenings and can't make it by 7pm, and those are normally the same evenings when we NEED take out. :-)

The hoagies and sandwiches here are top notch (they use Sarcone's rolls!). I especially enjoy the spicy tuna hoagie, their chicken salad is good, and, believe it or not, they make a mean turkey club: thick-cut bacon, delicious, thin-sliced turkey on perfectly toasted bread. I didn't know I could enjoy a turkey club so much. The men behind the counter are always really friendly and are quick to get your order together. I love this place!

I found myself in Lower Merion yesterday on a work assignment and thought "Why not make a trip to the beloved Cut Above?" I used to frequent this place on my way home from work but now I have a different job with a different commute :( This place is a true gem. I would put their sandwiches up against any others in the business, and they would be right up there at the top. I used to crave these sandwiches, and this most recent trip rekindled my passion of "the perfect sandwich." I ordered myself the usual Cut Above Italian with sharp provolone, mayo, lettuce and tomato. Everything about this sandwich is perfect. The bread has a sesame seed coating with that perfect outer crunch, but the inside balances out soft & chewy like the quintessential Sarcone roll. The meats, oh the meats! What a perfect blend of thinly sliced Italian meats with a capicola that packs that perfect punch of spice to make the sandwich shine above the rest. No questions why they call this place A Cut Above. If you haven't tried this place, you are doing yourself a big disservice. Go now and experience the best of the best! ***** 5 Stars ****** Best Italian hoagie I have ever had!!!

This place makes some of the best hogies I have had outside of the city. I love that they use Sarcone's rolls. I ordered the Veggie Deluxe for take out. The roll was perfectly crusty and seeded. The eggplant, broccoli rabe, and peppers were seasoned and sauteed to perfection. The slices of sharp provelone added that extra bite that the sandwich needed. I could eat one of these a week and never get tired of it. The prices are high but well worth it! I usually get two meals out of one hoagie so that is how I justify spending over $10 for one of these delicious creations.

I just recently tried "A Cut Above" for the first time during lunch. I ordered their Classic Italian hoagie, which was delicious! The ingredients were tasty and the sharp provolone was a nice touch. I will definitely be going for lunch there again. The customer service was superb as well. I loved that the owner (or who I assumed to be the owner) chatted with me while I waited for my food. It gave the whole deli a nice, friendly atmosphere.

I have now visited this establishment twice. On both occasions they were extremely friendly on the phone while taking my order. This goes a long way, as there is not to many things worse than feeling like you are bothering someone for being their customer. Very friendly upon arrival for pick-up as well. On trip 1, I retrieved a regular size Italian hoagie and asked for sweet peppers, hot peppers and pickles on the side. Unfortunately the sweet peppers never made it inside the to-go bag. However, The hoagie was packed with flavor and the roll was superb. The oil that was used was fantastic as it complimented the bread appropriately. All ingredients gave the impression that only the best and freshest are used. The wife did not care for the spicy ham, but I enjoyed it. Ironically, my one year old son also found it appetizing (he ate everything she discarded). ACA builds a better Italian hoagie than my favorite sandwich shop Pagano's. On trip 2, I picked up a chicken margherita. After two bites I was disappointed that I did not go hoagie again. I am a HUGE fan of Pagano's in Drexel Hill and they outshine ACA as far as cutlets go. The ACA cutlet was dry and the breading was lackluster. The mozzarella on the sandwich came off on the bland side. I am looking forward to my next sandwich selection. Observations: - The pepper shooters, mozzarella balls, mac salad, etc. do not look nearly as good as those behind the glass at Pagano's. May not be fair to say as I did not actually try any sides, going by appearance alone. -Pull the front door open, not a push, although it appears that way. -Sarcone's rolls are extremely hard to beat!

Love their hoagies, but when I was in the store today I noticed that the guys making the sandwiches DO NOT wear gloves when preparing ready to eat food. This is disgusting and against local health code. When I asked the manager he said "we've been doing it this way for 25 years and no one's gotten sick". How gross it to have people with bear hands touching their faces, scratching themselves then making your hoagie. I won't eat here again until they start using gloves. Is there anyone in PA regulating how restaurants operate?

Yummie. My nephew had brought a hoagie to me in Florida. It was delicious. On my last visit to Philly I went there myself. I only wish they would open in Boca. Great mozzarella, peppers and Italian meats. The staff is grand too.

The best hoagies around! Hot sandwiches are excellent too. I have friends that love out of town and make me bring them hoagies from here when I visit. It's that good.

Here's the most basic praise I can give. I ordered a turkey hoagie, with sharp provolone and onions. That's it. It doesn't get any more basic. After eating a turkey hoagie here, I'm now craving their turkey hoagies. If a place makes you crave something basic like a turkey hoagie, that means they're really good at it.

Is there anything better than this place?? Let me know when you find it. Cut above Italian is the absolute best. Order from this place every so often to give myself a little present!

A real, South Philly-style hoagie (don't get mad, Overbrook!) in all the best ways! Sarcone's bread, fresh authentic meats, great combinations, (try the fresh mozz and prosciutto), and your phone order is always ready when you get there. Don't even bother with those chains, even if the name is Italian. They SOLD OUT! This place is the real thing. Staff/owner is a little cranky but you're not here to have your ass kissed, you're here for the best hoagie for miles around. Get the damned hoagie, go to your car, turn on the radio, unwrap that sandwich and get busy! Don't even wait! You will be happier than you can remember ever being.

(3.5) ~ good overall food & service. Highly Recommend calling in your order as there's no place to sit;) Very good selection of Drinks, Chips & Tastykake items. OUR ITALIAN HOAGIE ORDER: * "Cut Above" Italian Hoagie = (4) very good * Regular Italian = (3.5) good * Classic Italian = (3) ok We concluded the "Cut Above" Italian was our favorite;)

Best hoagies I've ever had. Sarcone's hard rolls are great. This isn't Subway. This is the real deal. We've had most of the different Italian hoagies, the spicy tuna hoagie, the hot roast pork (with broccoli rabe), and the corn beef special and all of them were excellent! Get some of the fried long hot peppers if you like it spicy. Don't put mayo on the hoagies. It's kind of like putting ketchup on a hotdog instead of mustard. It's a travesty. Get oil instead.

Very consistent & very good. I just wish they had a bigger space to have some tables to enjoy their finely crafted hoagies & sandwiches onsite.

This place is flat out amazing everything is delicious! You will never go wrong getting a sandwich from here. I am not from the Pennsylvania area but I was in town for work and stopped there 3 times in 4 days because it was so good. This is definitely a small deli and I am not going to lie, when I walked in I thought the people were going to be kind of rude but boy was I wrong on that one. They were so nice and took care of my order every time I went in there.

The best hoagie / sandwich I've had in my life. My preference is the Spicy Turkey (add hot peppers), but everyone I know who orders from there loves what they get. Hands down, the number one food item I miss the most from home. Only complaint is the odd hours on Sunday (they close at 2pm -- very inconvenient during football season) and I wish they were open later on weekdays. FYI, it's takeout only.

If there is a place that makes better sandwiches please let me know where it is as I would LOVE to try it. Fantastic rolls, quality meats and cheeses sliced when they make your sandwich...I put this place up against ANY sandwich shop on the planet! They are very proud of what they do, and I'm very proud to pay them for it! Give it a shot and see how it compares to your current favorite place...quite simply, this place is the bomb! Don't just try the hoagies tho...the chicken cutlet sandwiches and hot roast beef\pork are also outstanding...try the pork with extra sharp provolone and some long hots....WOW! Makes me proud to have lived in the square!

Lots and lots of hoagie/sandwich options. Something for everyone. All of the lunch meat is high quality and the rolls are excellent. I ordered an Italian Hoagie and it definitely is one of the better ones in the area. A co-worker ordered the hot roast beef sandwich, which she loves. The only downfall: no option for wraps or salads. I understand that this is a hoagie shop, but it would be nice to have some healthier options for those that don't want all of the carbs. If you are looking for a legit Italian hoagie, try this place out.

I work in Newtown Square and love to try out different restaurants and take-out joints in the area at lunch time. A Cut Above Deli has the best hoagies around. I usually get the spicy turkey. They customize it as you want. I call ahead because the parking lot is always full at lunch time and there are often no parking spaces available. I leave my car running and quickly go in and pick up the hoagie, it is always ready on time. The service is great, the guys are polite, respectful, and always smile. I'm absolutely not a paid reviewer, so this is a 100% genuine review.

Call AHEAD, or you WILL be waiting b/c there are soo many ppl loving this place..but the good thing is that the sandwiches are Worth it. Good Italian hoagie - fresh meat, cheese, bread. Around $10 bought me a hoagie big enough to split and three bags of chips - not bad! Its also not a sit down place - just in case you've never been. They also offer catering services. I'm excited that I live so close to this place - will def return!

Upon my first visit, I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting something similar to the highly regarded Primo's Hoagies. I now know that's because I was only buying their small sandwiches. Their regular sized (and larger) sandwiches come on a big, tough seeded roll. Portion-wise, I think the regular is too big but it's with that bread that their hoagies taste their best. Of the four times I've been there I've only had the Old Italian and Spicy Turkey. Both of which were delicious, fresh, and made pretty quickly. Aside from cold and [some] hot sandwiches that can be called ahead or ordered in-store, they've got chips, salads (chicken salad, pasta, etc.), stuffed pepper shooters, etc. and a cold drink case. I think the small sandwiches ranging around $7 tends to be a bit high for what you get, but the regular sized ones around $9 are a bargain considering you'd be stuffed upon eating one.

Possibly the only reason I ever venture back into Newtown Square other than to see my parents. They really make you feel welcomed here. They make, hands down, the BEST Italian hoagie ever. I've had hoagies from far and wide and this place is IT. But wait...there is something even better than their hoagies. The roast pork will bring you to your knees. So delicious, so juicy, so much flavor. If you have never had the pleasure of tasting the food from this little spot in Newtown Square, make it a priority to stop their for lunch tomorrow.

Comparing sex to hoagies? Now that's interesting! Some people say "You don't know what you don't know." Others say "You don't know what you're missing." How sad would it be if the only burger you ever had was from Mickey Ds and you thought it was the best burger in the world! So come on out to the western burbs and visit these folks in Newtown Square and compare these amazing hoagies to your current favorite. Much has been said about Sarcone's rolls but it needs to be said once again. It's the foundation for building a transcendental hoagie. Try the Cut Above Italian Hoagie (Daniele Prosciutto, DiLusso Genoa Salami, Ham Cap, & BelGioioso Provolone). A small will be $7 and full size will be $9. This one is a bit spicy so expect a little zing. As you can see these are not WaWa prices but you are getting super premium rolls, meat and cheeses. It always amazes me that they can magically build a hoagie such that you can taste every ingredient. One item doesn't overwhelm everything else. As many have noted, these hoagies can hold their own with anything in South Philly. People have different reactions to tasting great food. Some might say "OMG." Others might sigh and roll their eyes. As I was walking in this week two young women were walking out with their order. One said to the other; "Trust me, great sex is a distant second to these hoagies." Now that's a compliment!

We ordered the following: 1) Meatball (from the Homemade Hot Sandwiches section) - loved the sauce on this meatball - YUM! 2) Cut Above Italian Hoagie (Daniele Prosciutto, DiLusso Genoa Salami, Ham Cap, & BelGioioso Provolone) - liked it but wasn't outstanding. It had a bit of a kick of pepper of some sort and some onions (which I'm not a big fan of raw onions) 3) A Cut Above Deli - Vanilla Cream - liked it but wasn't outstanding. We looked at the label saw that it was re-branded. Overall, everything was good. I would definitely go back for the meatball sandwich. The Cut Above Italian Hoagie was good... but I think I'll get it next time without the onions.

OK... I am 63 years old I've lived in five countries. I have never ever ever....... Ever ever, get it? written a restaurant review. I've had fabulous meals every everywhere. By the way, I don't consider pizza in my vocabulary and I'm not necessarily a hoagie guy. I like fresh naan bread in India , and I enjoyed living in Singapore... the best food of my life. No hoagies there. St Petersburg Russia was fun and even had a good bread. All good, all great actually. But I have never craved food enough to keep me thinking late into the night. I don't work for these guys. I've lived here 3 years. I've been there once. I had one sandwich. I went back the next day and I was late. Its a little after 9 p.m. They are closed. I'm thinking about swerving into a chestnut tree on the ice tonight. I need another Eyetalian hoagie on that friggin bread....... Basic Eyetalian.. easy dressing...easy mayo...crusty bread.....a little more exciting than ....use your imagination....not mine.... these guys are not pretty...not well dressed.. or even have great personalities. Thats OK...just tell them to make you a sandwich...but say please and thankyou Mmmm....end of first review....SWEAR...DONT KNOW THESE GUYS but now I want them to be nice to me....until I leave the country again.... .

I pass by A Cut Above (ACA) on my way to work every day, pretty much for the past 9 years. One of my coworkers says her husband and friends say this is the best place to get a hoagie. The planets aligned recently and I was on my way to work right around 12...so I gave ACA a shot. I called my order in without having the chance to see a menu. I figured an "italian with the works" was a safe bet. The hoagiemeister on the line said "ok, give us 20 minutes." I arrived at the deli no more than 5 minutes later. The hoagie wasn't ready when I got there, but when they saw me waiting they went to work and produced the hoagie well before that 20 minutes was up. Bonus points! The staff were really friendly as well. More bonus points! The hoagie itself...I have looked at a menu since eating the sandwich and I still can't figure out exactly which sandwich I got. Saying "Gimme the Italian" at ACA is sorta like saying "Gimme a hoagie." When you look at the menu you will notice there are about 5 sandwiches dubbed "Italian." I was not crazy about the selection of meats in my particular hoagie, but there is so much more to a great sandwich than just meat. For starters, one bite of this thing and I was already in love. I am not sure I have ever eaten a hoagie this fast. The roll is top notch, seeded, crusty exterior yielding a softer, chewier interior. Perfect. The toppings were extremely flavorful. I got hot peppers, sweet peppers, pickles, LTO, oil and vinegar. They use balsamic vinegar, which adds a touch of sweetness and is very nice. It seemed the meats on my sandwich were all different cuts of ham. I would have preferred some soppresata, perhaps some mortadella. But I didn't have a menu to look at when i called in so I can't fault them at all. This was my blunder. Another plus is that it's a very easy in and out with plenty of parking. And you can get to the deli whether you are going east or west on W. Chester Pike. I was hesitant to give a 5 star rating after just one visit, but I have to. This was easily in the top 5 hoagies I've ever had. I can't wait to go back.

Simply the best hoagie in the United States of America. This is why you visit Philly.

Fresh, high quality meats piled onto seeded Sarcone rolls puts them in the top tier of italian sandwich shops. If you are a fan of roast pork, you definitely want to try this place. Unless you have the metabolism of a 17 year old boy the "regular" sized hoagie is more than sufficient. Really, it is enough for two, but it tastes so good, you will likely stuff the whole thing down. Regular size hoagies and hot sandwiches will get you within a couple quarters of a ten dollar bill. And it is takeout only, no tables. Outside of the Italian Market in South Philadelphia, this is as good as it gets.

Warning - call your order in, especially around lunch time or expect to wait!!! There is a good reason for the above statement - they make the best sandwiches in the area. No sit down, take out only. Not just hoagies but roast pork, chicken cutlets, meatball parms. Their secret - everything is great quality from the rolls to the meats to the veggies to the sauces to the oils to the cheeses. Everything is fresh and tastes great. I have been going here for years and have never, ever been disappointed!!!!!! The Cut above Italian, Roast Pork with Cheese or the Turkey are my favorites - but everything is good - you really can't go wrong!!!!

Simply the best hoagies you will ever find. I'm not a born and bred Philadelphian, so I know my word probably doesn't mean that much, but I know what I like and I've probably eaten hoagies from hundreds of different shops. A Cut Above has been my benchmark for several years now. My bread and butter hoagie has always been a nice roast beef with just about everything thrown on it - spicy too, if that's an option. A Cut Above delivers great rolls (always a must - the foundation of a good sandwich), beautiful roast beef, and bacon. I can't understate the importance of this final ingredient. It's a sin to me when you can't get bacon at a deli and not only does A Cut Above provide, but it provides thick cut, juicy bacon with just enough crisp. It's perfect. My black lab stares at me with very sad eyes as I eat every last morsel of this un-shareable delicacy. Other things to know before going - it will be crowded (especially around lunch time), they take call-in orders (take advantage of this), they are pricey when compared to chain sandwiches (but completely worth it), and they will provide toppings on the side for large orders if you're ordering in advance for a large party (my wife and I get about five feet of hoagies for Christmas Eve every year from A Cut Above. Merry Christmas).

Sarcone's bread, fresh meats, sharp cheeses, south Philly sandwich sense...this place has it all. I'm lucky to have this place not far from my house. If there's a better deli within 5-10 miles, I'd like to hear about it. This place is like Primo's without the hands-off, franchise feel. Listen closely now, they have 6 or 7 different types of Italian hoagies. Just Italian hoagies. They also have other types like turkey, ham, etc. But that kind of focus on the Italian which is, after all, the star of the hoagie show should give you a sense for the expertise these folks possess. All of the Italians are good to great. I usually get the Cut Above Italian or the Sicilian because they both have the sharp provolone. But you can ask for sharp on any of the other hoagies too. Other favorites of mine fall under the Center City or even suburban categories as opposed to South Philly. They are the ham and cooper sharp and the chicken salad which I usually get with provolone, lettuce, and onions. Like any good hoagie shop in this region, they feature Herr's products with more varieties than you'd find at your typical corner deli. They also have some store brand old-timey sodas like orange cream, black cherry, root beer, etc. Those are pretty good. There are some other things in the case like meatballs and such but although I've been to this place about 30 or 40 times, I've never tried most of them. They look and smell good though. Hard to get past the hoagies. This place gets busy so place your order well in advance of your scheduled pick up time and be mindful of things like eagles kickoff time. I'm also not so sure of their hours so check before you get yourself all worked up thinking about the Italian deliciousness. minor note: the place is small and people can be idiots about where they stand or who's next so be aggressive or your wait can double sometimes. If this place ever does sell franchise rights, I want some.

Very good Italian hoagie. The bread was great, but would have preferred not having sesame seeds. Will definitely be back when in Newtown Square.

Tiny hole in the wall place that sells the most life altering, gigantic roast beef sandwich that you will ever eat. It's literally as big as my arm. The only thing I would change would be to offer roll options. I'm not a huge sesame seed fan, so having an option without the seeds would make this place perfect.

  • Josh L.

This deli is my benchmark for a good hoagie. They make a great corned beef special also. Their bread is half the battle and really makes their hoagies what they are. But their recipes and ingredients are awesome. I really like their sharp provolone cheese that they use also. Every employee there seems to be a part of a family. They all carry themselves like gentlemen and usually greet me with a friendly hello. This is my favorite hoagie shop anywhere in the world.

  • Lola R.

They use Sarcone's bread. Yum. So already, whatever comes next is good. My favorite is the Veggie with sharp provolone, eggplant, and sweet roasted peppers. The large sandwiches are huge, so I usually order small and then I still have more leftover for later. Everything I have had here has been delicious.

  • Dan K.

My favorite hoagies anywhere. It's a scaled up version of Primo's. Great bread, fresh meats and veggies. I usually lean towards the Cut Above Italian or Proscuitto w/ Fresh Mozzarella. I opted for the Veggie Deluxe last time around and while it was delicious, it was a bit greasy. It sat for an hour or so before I ate it, so I'll give it another chance. The staff is always welcoming and friendly.

  • Benjamin R.

I just discovered this place via Yelp, and the reviews don't lie. A Cut Above makes a mean hoagie. The Sarcone's seeded bread is the perfect vehicle for the myriad fillings of meats, cheeses and vegetables they have available. I got the Veggie Deluxe, stuffed with sauteed eggplant, broccoli rabe, and roasted red peppers. As is usually the case, this little hole in the wall deli offers far superior sandwiches than any chain could hope to, and makes WaWa look like school cafeteria food. Highly recommended.

Im not going to get into this too much but this place is hands down the best Hoagie in deleware county maybe even the deleware valley. It lost 1 star from me because... 1. The bread is phenominal but i could do without the sesame seeds. 2. All burps for the next few days will taste like the cut above (also some mean heartburn but it will never stop me) 3. I once saw Mitch Williams in there ( frakin prick)
